AI in Education: Preparing for the Future

Supporting Teachers and Learners in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is creating huge demand for AI skills, with nearly 60 million new jobs expected globally in the next five years (EC, 2020). Education plays a key role in helping people gain the knowledge needed to use AI effectively and ethically.

Teachers are essential in guiding learners not just to use AI tools but also to understand their impact. However, many teachers feel overwhelmed by rapid AI developments and unclear on how best to integrate them into their work.

At the same time, education systems are behind in adopting AI compared to other sectors. This gap risks increasing the digital divide and affecting future job opportunities.

To address this, educational institutions and policymakers need clear guidelines for using AI in a way that benefits both teachers and students (UNESCO, 2023). The EdTech industry is also seeking better knowledge on how to apply AI in teaching and learning.

TAICo aims to develop and test a model where teachers and AI work together, ensuring education systems can adapt to a changing world.

Ethical Considerations

Ethical integrity is central to TAICo. The project emphasizes human-centric AI design, ensuring transparency, accountability, and inclusivity. Potential risks—including biases in AI algorithms, data privacy concerns, and teacher over-reliance on AI—are mitigated through iterative co-design and stakeholder consultations. These measures align with the EU’s Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI.

Gender Dimensions and Inclusivity

Recognizing gender disparities in education and technology sectors, TAICo adopts a gender-sensitive approach. Efforts include:

Gender Balance

Ensuring balanced representation of male and female teachers in case studies.

Addressing Bias in AI

Addressing biases in AI tool development and application.

Teacher Training

Providing targeted training for teachers in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas.
